Description
Large armoire from Algiers Algeria, probably by Beaudroit, circa 1870/1880 In moulded wood, carved and painted in polychrome, open in front by two doors in high part and two leaves in low part, revealing inside a horseshoe arch. The piece of furniture has several compartments in reserve, adorned with arches in the shape of a mihrab, compartmented panels adorned with star-shaped polygons, the upper part decorated with dentils in the Moorish style, surmounted by a pediment and the belt adorned with a proverb in Arabic in Maghribi script. The sides are adorned with three registers: a star composition set with crescent moons, a centred floral composition, and a monogram YB. Inscriptions: Ma sha allah in the centre. Condition: very good. 220 x 110 x 41 cm (86.6 x 43.3 x 16.1 in.) Comparable work : Sotheby's, Paris, 30 March 2011, n°73, for a piece of furniture of the same workmanship. Gros & Delettrez, 17 June 2003, n°351, a model signed by Beaudroit in Algiers, dated 1868. Charles Beaudroit was a joiner and cabinetmaker who lived in Algiers, impasse Bab el-Oued, in the 1860s/80s. He took part in the Toulon exhibition in 1873, which attracted craftsmen from Algeria, and in the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1878. Charles Desprez praised his work in 1885, describing it as "truly marvellous works of cutting and Arabic painting", "some of which sold for their weight in gold" (in L'Hiver à Alger, 4th ed., 1885, pp. 124-125).
