Description
Engraved carnelian intaglio Mughal India, dated Hegira 1034 (=1624-25) Engraved orange carnelian, oval shape. Stone engraved with a verse from the Qur'an (sura 65, al-talâq, verses 2-3) arranged in seven lines of elegant nasta'lîq calligraphy. The fine engraving is framed by a continuous guilloche border. The date appears on the second line, with the numeral "3" rendered in an Indian script derived from Devanagari, typical of production on the subcontinent. Condition: one small chip. 2.8 x 3.5 cm (1.1 x 1.4 in.); intaglio attached 1.8 x 2.6 cm (0.7 x 1 in.) Attached is a grey-brown chalcedony or agate intaglio, engraved in naskh calligraphy with the shahada (1.8 x 2.6 cm). Provenance : Former A. Sandalian Collection (-) The elegance of the nasta'lîq, the regional transliteration of the numerals and the silky polish of the stone clearly point to the Mughal workshops of northern India during the reign of Jahangir (1605-1627), a period of excellence for imperial glyptics. This type of intaglio, often mounted as a seal or pendant, served as a protective amulet while also bearing witness to the scholarly refinement of its patron. A fine Inscribed carnelian gem, Mughal India, dated 1034 H / 1624-1625. Oval stone finely engraved with Qur'an 65:2-3 in elegant nasta'lîq script within a guilloche border. The numeral 3 is rendered in Indian style (Devanagari form). Produced under Jahangir, exemplifying the refined calligraphic and lapidary tradition of Mughal imperial workshops.
