Two armies clash in a swirling melee; the composition, with its great narrative density, pits two armoured horsemen against each other in the centre - one in golden armour firing a bow, the other parrying the attack - while the battle unfolds over several planes in an accumulation of brightly-dressed combatants mounted on white, grey and chestnut horses; In the background, separated from the melee by a purple rock, military musicians sound trumpets and beat drums from their mounts; standard-bearers (alam) frame the composition on either side.
A Mughal illustrated folio depicting battle scene, opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper, North India, circa 1600
