Description
Hafiz reciting his verses Mughal India, 17th century for the painting, 18th century for the calligraphy. Opaque pigments and gold on paper, mounted on an album page. Calligraphy on the reverse in naskh on a midnight blue background. Condition: repainted. Painting 13.5 x 9.5 cm (5.3 x 3.7 in.); calligraphy 10 x 13.5 cm (3.9 x 5.3 in.); folio 29.2 x 18.4 cm (11.5 x 7.2 in.) Provenance : Christie's, London, 5 October 2010, lot 370. Private collection, Paris. The composition depicts the poet Hâfiz, standing, leaning on a staff and holding a misbaha (prayer beads), reciting his verses from an open manuscript presented to him by a richly dressed young servant. The finely rendered figures stand out against a sober background. On the reverse, the text opens with greetings to Mîr Zafar 'Alî, Mîrzâ Muhammad Ja'far and Mîrzâ 'Alî Naqî, and then refers to a request from a certain Mîr Ghulâm 'Alî for specimens of different calligraphic styles, both old and recent, including various albums and folios.
