Description
Princely couple on a terrace India, Deccan, probably Hyderabad, 18th century Opaque pigments and gold on paper. On a terrace, a prince in a yellow turban and a princess adorned with jewels are seated side by side on a flowery divan, in front of a twilight sky; in the background, an architectural structure with orange awnings and bottle niches. In front of them, cushions, a tray and bottles on a carpet. Framed with a blue fillet decorated with gilded floral scrolls; beige margins enhanced with gilded flowering stems and a large poly-lobed arch with openwork scrolls, in the style of North India or Kashmir. Page 34 x 24.3 cm (13.4 x 9.6 in.); painting 16.8 x 13 cm (6.6 x 5.1 in.) Provenance Collection of the late Dr. Robert Douat (1926-2004), collector of Indian paintings. The palette - pale greens, warm oranges, pastel pinks and greens - is more in keeping with Deccan aesthetics than with the strict conventions of Mughal painting, suggesting a work produced in the wake of Hyderabad in the 18th century. The delicacy of the interplay of hands between the two figures - the prince tenderly grasping the wrist of his companion - betrays the hand of an accomplished painter. The theme of the princely couple on a terrace is given an intimate expression here, where the preciousness of the costumes, the subtlety of the glances and the twilight atmosphere create a gallant scene of great delicacy. A Mughal-Deccani album page depicting a princely couple on a terrace, opaque pigments and gold on paper, old collection number "54" on the verso, India, Deccan, probably Hyderabad, 18th century.
