Description
Krishna teasing Radha as she returns from the well India, Bikaner, late 18th century Opaque gold and silver pigments on paper. Wide margins decorated with silver flowers. Condition: accidents and missing edges, wear. Page 25 x 15 cm (9.8 x 5.9 in.); painting 16 x 10 cm (6.3 x 3.9 in.) Provenance Collection of the Maharaja of Bikaner. Collection of the late Dr. Robert Douat (1926-2004), collector of Indian paintings. The scene illustrates an episode in the amorous games (lîlâ) between Krishna and the gopî, a central theme in Vaishnavite devotional iconography. The couple stands out against a plain background, while two sacred cows enliven the foreground. Inscriptions (verso) In Devanagari, attributing the work to Mahmud, son of Ustad Ahmed, and mentioning the present of this painting on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Jyestha, Samvat 1838 (AD 1781) Stamp: "Miniature painting belongs to the personal collection of the Maharaja of Bikaner", affixed on 20 August 1964 (with "1760" probably an inventory number). Krishna teasing Radha returning from the well, opaque pigments, gold and silver on paper, India, Bikaner, end of 18th century. An inscription on the reverse records: "Painting offered on the 14th day of the dark half of the month of Jyestha, Samvat 1838." Stamp on the reverse: "Miniature painting belongs to the personal collection of the Maharaja of Bikaner... 20.8.64"
