Description
Ⓛ Flycatcher (chauri)
Central India, Deccan, Bidar, XIXᵉ century.
Bidri handle with rich silver-inlaid decoration: the twisted shaft with finely chased chevron pattern ends in a knob-shaped pommel; the tuft of white hair - presumably yak tail - is voluminous and well preserved.
Handle 28.3 cm (11.1 in.); overall length 71.5 cm (28.1 in.)
Provenance :
Private British collection, since the 1990s.
The chauri - a ceremonial fly swatter with a tuft of horsehair - is one of the oldest insignia of sovereignty in the Indian subcontinent. The bidri technique - an ammonia-blackened zinc and copper alloy inlaid with fine silver motifs - is the emblematic speciality of the Bidar workshops.
