Description
Mughal aftab ewer
North India or Deccan, 16th-17th century
Cast in chased gilt brass, with a pear-shaped body on a pedestal, shouldered by a long pouring spout and a zoomorphic handle with makara heads, the dome-shaped lid with a gripping knob; the chased decoration of mandorles and vegetal friezes stands out against an inlay of black paste; an ownership mark appears at the base of the neck.
Condition: lid detached; foliate decoration possibly later.
34.5 x 18 cm (13.6 x 7.1 in.)
Provenance :
French private collection, before 1980.
Inscription:
Sahibuhu sayyid 'Abdullah
"Its owner is Sayyid 'Abdullah.
This ewer is similar to several pear-shaped models with very elongated necks produced in North India in the 16th century (see M. Zebrowski, Gold, Silver & Bronze from Mughal India, Alexandria Press / Laurence King, London, 1997, figs. 191, 196, 197, 272; Christie's sale, 27 April 2017, no. 70). The stubby belly and the treatment of the makara heads suggest a date of the early 16th century (ibid, fig. 171).
A gilt brass aftabe ewer with pyriform body and makara handle, with owner's inscription 'sahibuhu sayyid Abdullah', North India or Deccan, 16th-17th century
