Lo-shaped pendant
Mysore or Jaipur, India, 19th century
Enamelled gold, in the form of an openwork lotus with petals, the front centred on a cabochon ruby in a drop surrounded by rose-cut white stones and emerald root petals engraved with foliage motifs, set in kundan; the reverse with polychrome floral decoration. Gold and green silk braided cord.
18K gold. Gross weight: 25 g; 5 x 4.3 cm (2 x 1.7 in.)
Emeralds engraved with floral motifs were one of the most prized ornaments of the Mughal courts, and were said to have therapeutic and talismanic properties, particularly against the effects of poison.
