Ⓛ Pair of bazuband with Nava ratna India, probably late 19th century Enamelled 750 thousandth yellow gold, jade, ruby, cultured half-pearl, coral, diamond, emerald, sapphire, set in kundan; each bangle is centred with a jade plaque inlaid with nine stones symbolising the Nava ratna; the ends depict a flower set with stones holding a cord; the back is entirely enamelled in polychrome with floral decoration. Condition: stones missing; chips and accidents. 4.2 x 7.5 cm (1.7 x 3 in.); total length 8.2 cm (3.2 in.); gross weight: 96.3 g. Bibliography : B. Inspired by ancient Hindu astrology, the combination of nine stones in the Nava ratna each personifies a celestial divinity - the central ruby representing the Sun - according to a cosmological system uniting the seven planets. Used as an amulet, the Nava ratna is both a representation of the universe and the expression of a divine plan for its wearer.
