Ⓛ Lady smoking a hookah, known as "Padshahzade Firangis". India, Lucknow, circa 1780 Opaque pigments heightened with gold on paper on paper. A languid woman on a takht (seat) richly decorated with gilded floral motifs, holds a cup and smokes a luxurious huqqa (water pipe) whose bulbous, jewel-encrusted body rests on a tripod support. On the reverse, an inscription in Nastaliq characters identifies the subject as no. 29: "Padshahzade Firangis", a designation used in Mughal sources for a woman of European origin. 15 x 11.5 cm (5.9 x 4.5 in.) Provenance : British private collection; acquired from Maggs Bros. Ltd, London, 1973. The meticulous execution of the furniture and the quality of the gold highlights bear witness to a good Lucknow workshop, whose output in the second half of the 18th century reflects a marked interest in female figures of European or "Frankish" appearance.
