Portrait of a gentleman smoking hookah
North India, Mughal art, late 18th century
Double-sided album page (painting and calligraphy). Opaque pigments, ink and gold on paper; wide deep blue margins enhanced with floral scrolls drawn in gold.
On the recto, a sovereign dressed in a floral jama embellished with gold and wearing a turban adorned with pearls is depicted sitting cross-legged on a carpet, smoking a hookah under a pavilion with white architecture; at his side, a servant holds a chauri (fan with a handle), a traditional attribute of imperial sovereignty.
On the reverse, a Persian quatrain calligraphed in nasta'liq, accompanied by a library stamp.
