Description
Dhurrie Kelim Probably Bikaner, North India, circa 1900 Flat woven cotton carpet with polychrome decoration on a light blue ground, decorated with a large central stylised floral medallion, framed by a garland of geometrical flowers and a triple frame of successive borders. 340 x 257 cm (133.9 x 101.2 in.) Dhurries were traditionally woven in northern India, notably in Bikaner, Jodhpur and Jaipur, where royal workshops produced them from the XIXᵉ century for palaces and garrisons. They are distinguished by the finesse of their weaving and by a palette of harmonious pastel tones, characteristic of Rajasthani production around 1900. The stylised floral motifs and rigorous symmetry of the decoration are reminiscent of Mughal models, adapted to the taste of princely and British commissions at the turn of the century. An Indian dhurrie cotton carpet, probably Bikaner, North India, circa 1900
