Description
Large ceramic plate from Multan Sindh, North India, 19thᵉ century Terracotta painted on a reddish-brown ground with a large stylised floral bouquet with radiating stems; the marli is decorated with a frieze of geometric and circular motifs in matching tones. Condition: restoration. D. 61 cm (24 in.) Provenance : Estate of Walter Beckwith Burford (1882-1944), British India Railways engineer, acquired during his travels. Nineteenth-century ceramics from Multan and Sind were characterised by a sober palette of ochres, browns and whites and a vigorous decorative rhythm inherited from a long tradition of local craftsmanship.
