Description
Woman's dress with embroidered bib Kutch, India, 19th-early 20th century Dark green silk embroidered with polychrome threads in floral motifs on a background of small set mirrors (shisha); straight cut with long sleeves, embroidered central bib and side pocket. Condition: a few alterations; good overall conservation of the embroidery. One yoke on the side. Size: 121 x 108 cm (47.6 x 42.5 in.) The embroidery of Kutch, a region of western Gujarat, is renowned for the finesse of its silk thread work and the systematic use of shisha - inlaying small mirrors into the embroidery - which gives the garments their shimmering, apotropaic character.
