This portrait depicts Maharao Raja Shri Sir Raghubir Singh Sahib Bahadur, ruler of the princely state of Bundi in Rajasthan, who reigned from 1889 to 1927. The maharaja is depicted full-length, in a solemn attitude in keeping with the codes of official court portraiture. He is dressed in a rich princely costume and wears an imposing turban adorned with jewels, as well as multiple necklaces of pearls and hard stones, visible signs of his rank and authority. The pictorial treatment, executed in oil on canvas, bears witness to the evolution of Indian court painting at the end of the XIXᵉ century, a period marked by the gradual adoption of Western techniques and formats, while retaining an iconography and frontality inherited from local tradition. The attention paid to ornaments, textiles and attributes of power contrasts with a sober background, highlighting the figure of the sovereign. A Portrait of Maharao Raja Shri Sir Raghubir Singh Sahib Bahadur, ruler of Bundi, (r.1889-1927), Oil on canvas, Indian School, late 19th - early 20th century.
