Ⓛ Portrait of the Mughal emperor Akbar II.
North India, Delhi School, circa 1820-40.
Opaque pigments, ink and gold on paper. The emperor, depicted in a three-quarter bust within a finely illuminated oval medallion, surmounted by a parasol, a traditional attribute of Mughal sovereignty.

This iconography is part of the tradition of early nineteenth-century Delhi court portraits, influenced in particular by Ghulam 'Ali Khan, of which a miniature on ivory in the British Library (inv. Add.Or.2538) offers a close parallel, possibly serving as a codified model for the representation of the emperor. The illuminated oval medallion format bears a marked formal resemblance to a portrait of the fourth Nepalese ruler held at LACMA (no. M.76.129).
