Four portraits of sovereigns
Delhi school, North India, circa 1840
Opaque pigments on ivoirine, mounted in a silver-mounted medallion, depicting :
- Asaf-ud-Daula, nawab of Awadh (r. 1775-1797) ;
- Shuja-ud-Daula, nawab of Awadh (r. 1753-1775);
- two portraits of Banu Begam, better known as Mumtaz Mahal, wife of Shah Jahan (empress from 1628 to 1631).
8 x 5.2 cm (3.1 x 2 in.) each.
The portrait of Shuja-ud-Daula can be compared to a similar one in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg (inv. IS-1108).
A set of four Indian miniature portraits on ivorine, set in silver mounts as medallions, representing: Asaf-ud-Daula, Nawab of Awadh (r. 1775-1797); Shuja-ud-Daula, Nawab of Awadh (r. 1753-1775); and two portraits of Banu Begam - known as Mumtaz Mahal, wife of Shah Jahan (Empress 1628-1631). Compare the portrait of Shuja-ud-Daula with a closely related example preserved at the State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg (inv. IS-1108). Delhi school, North India, c. 1840.
