Description
Princely assembly during the Basant Panchami festival Lucknow, North India, 19th century Opaque pigments on paper 35 x 48 cm (13.8 x 18.9 in.) Provenance : Former Nantes collection. Under a large red canopy with gold fringe stretched out in front of a palace facade with white arcades, an Awadh nawab is surrounded by courtiers, dignitaries and servants; to the left, musicians and dancers entertain the party; guards armed with rifles frame the scene; in the background, a landscape of wooded hills and a lake stretches out under a pale blue sky. The dominant yellow of the costumes is the emblematic colour of Basant Panchami, the festival of spring and of the goddess Saraswati, celebrated at the heart of the cold season.
