Description
Princely feast Kota, Rajasthan, XIXᵉ century Opaque pigments and gold on paper. Condition: very good; fresh colours; framed. 39 x 37.5 cm (15.4 x 14.8 in.) A bearded prince with a white turban sits under an orange canopy; opposite him, a crowd of brightly-dressed courtesans, musicians, dancers and servants come to life in a vast forest garden of remarkable luxuriance; a pond alive with fountains and birds occupies the centre of the composition; the vegetation - palm trees, banana trees, fruit trees and cypresses - is populated by white egrets. The Kota school is distinguished by its exuberant treatment of nature, which serves as a backdrop for court and hunting scenes; this composition illustrates the theme of seasonal pleasures, celebrating the refined life of the sovereign in an Edenic setting. A Kota painting of a princely festival in a forest garden, opaque pigments and gold on paper, Kota, Rajasthan, 19th century. 39 x 37.5 cm
