Provenance : Former Arthur and Doris Glick Collection, Beverly Hills, before 2022. Shiva and Parvati are depicted seated under a tree presiding over a scene of ecstatic ritual in a wooded landscape; in the foreground, nude or red-robed yogis smoke, drink and meditate among animals in an atmosphere of mystical celebration. This painting illustrates the dual nature of Shiva - both ascetic and fertile - and alludes to the practices of sacred intoxication specific to certain Shaivite traditions.
