Description
Ⓛ The goddess Kali Bengal school, circa 1920 Gouache heightened with gold and pencil on pressed paper. 42 x 30 cm (16.5 x 11.8 in.) This representation is part of the tradition of devotional paintings by the Bengal school, whose production of pata - sacred images for domestic and ritual worship - was very widespread in and around Calcutta from the second half of the 19th century. The posture of Kali standing on Shiva symbolises the cosmic power of the goddess mastered by the pure consciousness of her husband; the decapitation of the demons represents the destruction of the ego and illusion. The cult of Kali, which is particularly strong in West Bengal, is celebrated during the Kali Puja, which coincides with the festival of Diwali. A devotional painting of the goddess Kali standing on Shiva, gouache on paper, Bengal School, circa 1920. In case of export from UK, VAT on sale fees can be refunded upon presentation of customs documentation.
