Description
Polyorama Panoptique.
Invented and patented in 1849 by the toy manufacturer Pierre Henri Armand Lefort. This optical box is inspired by the principle of Daguerre’s diorama, in particular the switching between views via a system of shutters that illuminate the scene through reflection or transparency, creating the illusion of day or night. Wooden body (height 18 cm, width 22 cm, depth 12 cm; cylindrical bellows 13×15 cm) covered in patterned green paper, varnished mahogany front panel, magnifying glass 3 cm in diameter. Six 15×20 cm views accompany our model (four of which have holes or tears of varying severity)
The copper rod used to operate the shutters is missing.
