Description
LIP, “Dauphine” watch with a gold-plated steel case featuring a crenellated insert, silver dial with applied gold hour markers, 1960s, manual-winding mechanical movement - Diameter 34 mm (brand new from stock with a tiny scratch on the outer left-hand side of the dial; in working order but with no guarantee for the future – a service may still be required)
COMMENT: The Dauphine is the story of a ‘sub-brand’ that became an icon. Launched in 1957 by Fred Lip to offer an affordable entry-level model, it took its name — following the forced takeover of the brand by the industrialist Henri Basquin — from the Renault Dauphine, France’s best-selling budget car. The first dials, in fact, bore only ‘Dauphine’, with no mention of Lip, before the model’s success led to the name ‘Lip Dauphine’ being adopted
