Description
TIBETAN OR SINO-TIBETAN SCHOOL, Thangka – Palden Lhamo, early 20th century, tempera and gold on cotton canvas – approx. 34 x 27 cm (signs of wear)
ICONOGRAPHY: Palden Lhamo (dPal ldan lha mo) — the great protector of Tibetan Buddhism, the only female deity amongst the eight Dharmapalas (protectors of the Dharma). Her intense blue-black colour, her wrathful face with bulging eyes, and her distinctive mount make her easily recognisable.
ATTRIBUTES: Palden Lhamo rides a mount with a light-coloured coat. She wears a crown of five skulls (pentacranium) symbolising victory over the five poisons of the mind (ignorance, desire, anger, pride and jealousy). Her hair is a fiery orange, blending into the flames of the halo of glory (prabhamandala) that surrounds her. In her many hands, one can make out a spear or staff (khatvanga) and what appears to be a skull-cup (kapala). She is clad in a tiger-skin skirt, a common attribute of wrathful deities (krodha).
