Description
JAPAN, Incomplete tosei-gusoku-style samurai armour, Edo period (1613–1868) – H. 74 cm, W. 38 cm, D. 25 cm (signs of wear, damage and missing parts) DETAILS: - Yodarekake: Neck guard with horizontal blades lacquered in red/brown (urushi); - Do – Chest plate with horizontal blades lacquered in red/brown (urushi); - Kusazuri – Skirt with horizontal plates and blue silk lacing cords (odoshi); - Suneate – Leg guards made of fabric with black lacquered (urushi) plates. HISTORICAL NOTE: The tosei-gusoku is the definitive form of Japanese armour, developed from the 16th century onwards to meet the demands of infantry combat and warfare involving firearms. During the Edo period (1615–1868), armour became more of an object of prestige and ceremony than a piece of military equipment, which explains the care taken with its decoration and lacquerwork.
