COMMENT: The Yashica Mat-124 G holds a special place in the history of popular medium-format photography: launched in 1970, it represents the culmination of the line of dual-lens (TLR) Yashica range, and remains today one of the most accessible and widely used cameras of its kind amongst film photographers rediscovering the 6×6 format — a status comparable, relatively speaking, to that of the Rolleiflex in a more high-end range, to which the Mat-124G offers a historically more affordable alternative.
The twin-lens principle, inherited from early 20th-century studio cameras, is based on two superimposed lenses: one dedicated to framing (from above, on a ground glass screen, within the hinged cover characteristic of these cameras), the other to taking the photograph. Whilst this system requires a particular approach to composition — the image is laterally inverted on the ground glass, which takes some getting used to — it offers, in return, silent operation (as there is no mirror flip-up), a feature particularly appreciated in street photography or close-up portraiture.
The “G” in the model name denotes the addition of a coupled CdS photodiode, integrated into the front panel — a significant improvement on the early Mat models without a light meter, offering direct light metering without the need for external accessories, which is particularly welcome for on-the-go use.
