COMMENT: L’Hermione, frigate of liberty. A 12-gun light frigate, built in 1779 at the Rochefort shipyard to designs by Chevillard the Elder, she carried the Marquis de La Fayette to Boston in 1780, sealing the Franco-American alliance during the War of Independence. Lost in 1793 on the shoals off Le Croisic, she was reborn two centuries later thanks to an exceptional naval archaeology project carried out in Rochefort from 1997 to 2014. In 2015, its replica re-enacted the historic crossing to the United States, where it received a triumphant welcome. A symbol of French naval expertise and the friendship between the two nations, it remains one of the most iconic vessels in maritime heritage.
