Description
HENRIOT - QUIMPER, A group of polychrome glazed earthenware figures depicting Saint Cornély making the sign of the cross, with an ox at his feet, 20th century, manufacturer’s mark on the base – H. 34 cm COMMENT: Saint Cornély is the patron saint of horned animals — oxen, cows, sheep — and, more broadly, of livestock. He is extremely popular in Brittany, and this is of direct relevance to you as the Church of Saint-Cornély in Carnac is one of the main centres of his worship. According to hagiographic tradition, Cornély was a 3rd-century pope — Pope Corneille (251–253 AD) — who was persecuted under Emperor Gallus. Fleeing Rome with his two oxen, he is said to have been caught up with by his persecutors at the tip of the Carnac peninsula, facing the sea. Unable to go any further, he is said to have turned his pursuers to stone – hence, according to popular Breton legend, the origin of the megalithic alignments at Carnac, interpreted as a petrified army. He died a martyr around 253. The link with horned animals stems from a popular etymological association: Cornély → corne (horn) → horned cattle. This is a classic example of a saint whose devotional attributes derive from a paronymy, rather than from an event in his life. His feast day is celebrated on the second Sunday in September in Carnac, with the ‘Pardon de Saint-Cornély’, one of the oldest and most widely attended Breton pilgrimages, where oxen are traditionally blessed in front of the church — a remarkable 17th-century façade featuring an external canopy unique in Brittany, beneath which the saint’s statue is displayed during the Pardon.
