Description
COSTEBELLE, Covered box in moulded-pressed opalescent glass with a daisy motif, Art Deco period, circa 1920–1930, signed on the underside of the base with a point - H. 6.5 cm x D. 9 cm approx. (in good overall condition)
COMMENT: Opalescent glass reached its peak in France during the 1920s–1940s, driven by the Art Deco aesthetic and the widespread adoption of industrial moulding and pressing techniques. Its milky hue with bluish highlights, achieved by adding metal oxides (notably fluorspar) to the glass mass, lends itself perfectly to relief decoration — floral motifs, female figures and stylised fauna. René Lalique is its undisputed leading figure. Following in his footsteps, Verlys, Sabino, Hunebelle and Etling produced works of genuine quality, alongside Costebelle, whose lidded boxes and toiletries were fully in keeping with the taste of the era.
