Description
CRISTALLERIE ROYALES DE CHAMPAGNE, Partially satin-finished crystal dagger with arabesque decoration, ‘Les Armes’ collection, manufacturer’s mark on the tip of the blade – H. 44 cm (in its original case, in good overall condition)
COMMENT: A short-bladed hand weapon, the dagger was used in the left hand to complement the sword or rapier. The guard, designed to protect the hand, quickly became the focus of elaborate ornamentation. Thus, the richness of the decoration and the metalwork transformed these daggers into true works of art, particularly in 16th-century Spain. Such is the case with this late 16th-century, early 17th-century dagger, which may bear the mark of Pedro de Belmonte of Toledo and may have belonged to one of the Spanish viceroys. A true work of sculpture, this prestigious piece from the “Les Armes” collection of the “Royales de Champagne”, crafted from the purest crystal in a single piece, was fashioned by master glassmakers whose traditional craftsmanship has been passed down since the reign of Louis XIV.
