Description
FRENCH GLASS (Charles SCHNEIDER – 1881–1953), Globular ‘Orchids’ vase in multi-layered glass, featuring an acid-etched design of blooming red orchids on a mottled yellow background, circa 1925–1927, signed ‘Le Verre Français’ in engraving on the foot - H. approx. 16 cm x D. approx. 14 cm (in good overall condition)
ON ‘LE VERRE FRANÇAIS’: “As early as 1918, the ‘Le Verre Français’ trademark was registered by the Schneider glassworks to create a range that was more whimsical than the high-end glassware of the Schneider line.
Despite the simplicity of the shapes and stylised designs of this second commercial range, the Le Verre Français brand very quickly enjoyed great success, particularly across the Atlantic. Customers appreciated not only the boldness and modernity of the colours, but also the contrast between the smooth, glossy patterns that stood out against the matt, acid-etched backgrounds.
Whilst the range of colours used remained limited (seventeen shades were recorded), over one hundred and eighty designs were identified. These appeared indiscriminately on vases of various shapes and in several colours, thus increasing the number of models. Although the brand was profitable due to its widespread commercial distribution, the additional cost of etching the designs did, however, reduce its profit margin.
Initially identified by a tricolour pyramid, then replaced by the ‘Le Verre Français’ signature, the brand’s items subsequently bore, from 1925 onwards, the term ‘Charder’, derived from the contraction of ‘Charles Schneider’. Towards the end of the 1920s, the pieces evolved towards more geometric shapes and designs.” (source: Conches-en-Ouches Glass Museum)
