Description
Kjell ENGMAN (born 1946) - KOSTA BODA (SWEDEN), hand-blown and enamelled glass bowl decorated with a flock of periwinkles taking flight against a snow-covered landscape, from the ‘October’ series produced between 1986 and 1997, signed on the reverse with a point - Height approx. 9.5 cm x Length approx. 13.5 cm x Width approx. 10 cm (in good overall condition) BIOGRAPHY: Kjell Engman (born 1946) is one of the most distinctive designers at the Swedish glassworks Kosta Boda, which he joined in 1978. His style is instantly recognisable: slender human figures, bright and contrasting colours, and a narrative and theatrical quality that sets him apart from his Scandinavian contemporaries. His most sought-after series – Catwalk, Bon Bon, Jazz and Can Can, demonstrate a taste for humour and movement, a far cry from classic Nordic restraint. The pieces are signed on the base “Kosta Boda · Kjell Engman”, with a model number or “unika” number for one-off pieces. Among Kosta Boda’s other leading figures are Bertil Vallien (1938–2024), a leading light of the factory and a master of sand-cast glass, whose work evokes poetic and dreamlike worlds; Ulrica Hydman-Vallien (1938–2018), whose enamel-painted designs featuring naïve and colourful figures are very popular; Ann Wolff, whose deep engravings on multi-layered glass reflect a more conceptual approach; and Vicke Lindstrand (1904–1983), formerly of Orrefors, a master of fine engraving whose vintage pieces are now highly sought after.
