SAUZÉ FRÈRES, Set of 14 “Chypre” bottles in moulded-pressed glass with grooved decoration, silver-coloured label, Art Deco period, circa 1920–1950 – H. 6 cm (small); H. 8.5 cm (medium); H. 10.5 cm (large); H. 15 cm (extra-large) (signs of wear and stains, traces of previous contents, sold as is)
COMMENT: In 1910, Sauzé Frères launched the “Chypre” eau de Cologne, which contained 33 natural essences. This marked the beginning of the chypre character’s emergence in colognes, eventually giving rise to a fragrance family in its own right, which officially began with the launch of Coty’s “Chypre” in 1917. In other words, Sauzé Frères created the first chypre in 1910, seven years before Coty. It was, therefore, a pioneering house whose history has been largely overshadowed by Coty’s commercial success.
