COMMENTARY ON AMBER AND LEATHER: In 1922, Sauzé Frères created “Amber and Leather Grande Classe” specifically for the émigré Russian nobility who had fled the Bolshevik Revolution and were flocking to Paris from 1917 to 1920. It was a fragrance designed to console an uprooted aristocracy by evoking the splendour and noble materials of Imperial Russia — amber and leather being two notes intimately linked to the Russian imagination of the time. Chanel, Coty and other major houses followed suit.
