Description
According to *L'ANTIQUE* – LEOCHARES (4th century BC), Important bust of the Belvedere Apollo in Carrara marble and grey marble veined with brown, on a circular, stepped plinth – H. 75 cm x L. 50 cm x W. 30 cm approx. (slight traces of white paint)
COMMENT: The Belvedere Apollo, discovered in Rome by Cardinal Giulano della Rovere, the future Pope Julius II (1503–1513), has in fact been identified as a 2nd-century AD Roman copy modelled on a Greek bronze original attributed to the sculptor Leochares (4th century BC). A source of inspiration for the greatest artists who stayed in Rome and for aristocrats undertaking the Grand Tour, the Belvedere Apollo was regarded in the 18th century by the art historian Winckelmann (1717–1768) as the supreme expression of Greek art, “the highest ideal of art amongst all the ancient works that have come down to us”.
