Description
M. MARX (20th century), Peugeot Lion – Gilded bronze figure depicting the famous mascot featured on the radiator caps of the Sochaux-based brand, signed on the rock “M. Marx”, on a hexagonal, stepped base of blackened wood – H. 16 cm (minor wear to the base)
COMMENT: The lion has been Peugeot’s emblem since 1847, when it already stood as a guarantee of the quality of the tools and blades produced by the family-run workshop in Sochaux. When Peugeot entered the motor industry, the lion naturally found its way onto radiator caps — initially in a more restrained manner in the 1910s, then with full artistic maturity in the 1920s, a period when these bronze or chrome-plated brass mascots, often rearing up on their hind legs, were crafted with the sculptural care characteristic of the great French tradition of animal sculpture inherited from Barye. The aerodynamic requirements of the 1930s sounded the death knell for the figurative mascot, which gradually disappeared from bonnets to be replaced by a graphic logo.
