COMMENT: Born out of the ‘people’s car’ project ’ entrusted to Ferdinand Porsche in 1934 — a project that showcased his genius even before the Stuttgart sports cars — the KdF-Wagen went into mass production after the war, spurred on by the British who revived the Wolfsburg factory. Its air-cooled boxer engine and its rounded silhouette, virtually unchanged over sixty-five years, make it the most-produced car in history based on a single model: more than 21.5 million units by 2003, the last of which rolled off the production lines in Puebla, Mexico. An icon of the 1960s and a film star under the name Choupette, it embodies both the democratisation of motoring and an unrivalled emotional attachment. Without it, there would have been no Porsche 356.
