Description
Sacha GUITRY (1885–1957), Mr A-J Duggan – (Owner of ‘Strip the Willow’), Art Deco period, 1930s, graphite pencil drawing on paper, titled at the bottom, signed in the bottom right-hand corner - approx. 14 x 9 cm (one crease in the paper)
COMMENT: Strip the Willow was a stallion who won the Prix du Jockey Club in 1932 and was owned by A. J. Duggan (1885–1967). A photograph taken at Chantilly on 12 June 1932, the day of the Prix du Jockey Club, shows Strip the Willow being led by A. J. Duggan. The horse’s 1932 record is remarkable: he achieved the prestigious Prix du Jockey Club–Grand Prix de Paris double, a feat accomplished by only 23 horses in the entire history of these two races.
