COMMENT: Born in Kortrijk and died in Brussels, Louis Robbe (brother of Henri) was already an avid draughtsman as a child. He studied art, but initially practised as a lawyer and even served for a time as a justice of the peace. He was taught by Verboeckhoven and retained his ‘badger-like’ style for some time. However, he was able to replace studio work with studies from life. He supported Charles de Groux, the instigator of the Realist movement in Belgium. His final years were marred by acute neurasthenia. He settled in Brussels in 1840. He devoted himself seriously to painting from 1833 onwards, though he had already been awarded a medal in 1830. In 1837, he was awarded a medal in Brussels and, in 1855, the same honour was bestowed upon him at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. He was made a Knight of the Order of Leopold in 1843, an Officer in 1863, and a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1845.
