BURMA, early 20th century
A lacquered and gilded wooden sculpture of the Buddha, depicted seated in the vajrasana posture, with his right hand lowered in the bhumisparsha mudra—the gesture of calling the earth to witness—whilst his left hand rests on his knees, palm facing the sky. The face has a serene expression, with half-closed eyes and a slight smile. The head is adorned with fine curls surmounted by the ushnisha, highlighted at the base by a headband inlaid with polychrome glass beads.
