Description
Ceremonial staff (atua rakau) carved from wood with a brown patina; the smooth shaft is topped by two stylised figures leaning against one another and forming a cavity between them; they have a protruding belly and a round head with a pointed chin, showing signs of wear, Rarotonga, Cook Islands, 19th century, length 170 cm. Minor damage and a section missing from one head; signs of wear at the base. This style of carving is comparable to a ceremonial paddle sold at a public auction by Mr Guy Loudmer on 25–26 June 1992.
