Description
"Standing bronze Buddha, Dvaravati period, central Thailand, 8th–11th century. H: 24 cm. Some damage. Formerly in a French collection from the 1960s. Certificate of authenticity by Bernard Gomez, October 2021. Depicted in a frontal and hieratic pose, the Buddha wears the uttarāsaṅga monastic robe, which envelops the body in long, simple folds. Both hands are raised in the double vitarka mudrā gesture, symbolising the teaching and transmission of the Dharma. The serene face, the hairstyle with tight curls and the elongated forms of the body are characteristic of Dvaravati art, which is marked by its Indian heritage whilst developing a stylisation unique to South-East Asia.
