Description
"Small seated bronze Buddha, Dvaravati period (Thailand, 7th–9th century). H: 11 cm. Provenance: Former American collection from the 1990s. The Buddha is depicted in the padmāsana posture, his hands in the double vitarka mudrā, symbolising the teaching and transmission of the Dharma. His serene face, with half-closed eyes, expresses meditation and spiritual awakening. He wears the saṅghāṭi, leaving his right shoulder bare, in accordance with iconography characteristic of Dvaravati art. Although rooted in the Indian Gupta tradition, this bronze sculpture differs from it in its more pronounced stylisation and simplified forms, illustrating the Buddhist ideals of wisdom, inner peace and compassion.
