Description
A cabinet on a folding table, decorated with a palace façade in two sections, featuring columns, pediments, balusters and medallions, reminiscent of Sansovino’s architecture. Imitations of semi-precious stones, marble and lapis lazuli are rendered in wallpaper and coloured glass. Entirely upholstered in studded leather. Small metal fittings and a castor alternate with gilded fillets and arabesques, whilst a Fortuna Marina is stamped on all four sides. The open lid reveals a black and gold lacquer decoration featuring scrollwork sprouting from urns. At the corners, silver leaves set beneath glass mimic the lustre of the fine mother-of-pearl imported from the East. It is fitted with two gilded bronze carrying handles. The table, with two drawers adorned with putti heads and a double crossbar, features a panelled front on the drawer. Italy, Venice, late 16th century. H.113 W.53 D.37 (overall dimensions when closed). Normal signs of wear and restoration.
