Description
A jug, or so-called ‘deceptive’ pot, on a green-glazed terracotta pedestal. The ovoid body is decorated with gadroons, separated in the middle by a concentric line. Both sides of the body are adorned with coats of arms bearing the arms of France, one flanked by palm leaves and the other by cornucopias. The spout is decorated with a mascaron. The handle is rectangular. Saintonge, La Chapelle-des-Pots, c. 1600. Height 22 cm. Wear and missing parts. The spout has been reattached. Ref. A very similar example is held in the archaeological collections of the museums of Saintes under inventory number 2000.1.1B. Comparable examples, but with a double spout, are held in the collections of the Musée d’Ecouen and the Musée du Louvre under inventory numbers MR 2351 and OA 3989.
