Description
A vermeil chalice, paten and small ladle; the chalice consists of a hemispherical bowl with a screw-fit base, featuring an engraved design of fleurs-de-lis alternating with purple and yellow gemstones and the inscription “SANGUIS XHRISTI” ; it rests on a foot adorned with a bow featuring alternating fleur-de-lis motifs and violet and yellow gemstones, and a frieze of hearts; the base’s flange features a chiselled design on one side depicting a scene of the Crucifixion and on the other a goblet framed by two birds and the engraved inscription ‘BIBITE INEBRIAMINI’; beneath the base, the inscription “Eugenio Regnault Hunc Calincem Sua Mater Suaque Soror et Amici Donno Dedere Anno Domini MCMXXVI” is engraved. The centre of the paten is engraved with a Eucharistic motif (a fish and a basket) and the inscription “Corpus Christi, Venite Comedite”. All pieces bear the fineness mark: Minerva I, and the master silversmith’s mark: Paul Brunet: initials PB with a mitre (1871–1913); total weight of the lot: 1,008.2 g; height (chalice) 19 cm, base diameter: 15.5 cm, diameter (paten): 19 cm. Paul Brunet was a Parisian silversmith working on Rue de la Ferronnerie, listed in Berthod and Hardouin-Fugier’s *Dictionnaire des Arts Liturgiques*. A leading specialist in church silverwork, he won several medals at exhibitions, including those of 1876 and 1878.
