Description
TUDOR. Men’s Oyster Prince Submariner wristwatch, 200 m. Ref. 7924, circa 1960. Automatic movement, displaying hours, minutes and seconds. Black dial, gold-tone hands. Stainless steel case. The steel case back is engraved with ‘Original Oyster case by Rolex Geneva’. Case diameter: 37 mm; height: 15 mm. Scratched bezel, signs of wear. Movement requires servicing. Attached diving-style fabric strap. Renamed the ‘Big Crown’ by collectors in reference to its 8 mm winding crown, the reference 7924 was introduced in 1958. At first glance similar to its predecessors, it features a fundamental innovation in that its water resistance has now been doubled, with a maximum diving depth fixed at 200 metres. To achieve this new threshold, the 37 mm diameter Submariner case was made thicker and fitted with a larger screw-down crown. A new, thicker, domed ‘Tropic’-style Plexiglas crystal was fitted to provide greater resistance to high pressures. Powered by the same automatic Calibre 390 as the 7922 model, this new Submariner features the inscription ‘200 m = 660 ft’ at 6 o’clock on its black lacquered dial. Its hands retain the characteristic Submariner design. Bibliographic reference: www.tudorwatch.com/fr/inside-tudor/history/tudor-history-submariners-1954-to-1968.
