Description
Jean-François PERDRIX (1746-1809). White stag, doe and fawn (30.6 X 20.5); family of stag (30.2 X 20). Pair of oak panels, painted on the reverse (missing). One signed lower left and dated 1784; on the back an old attribution to Oudry. Framed (missing). In 1763, Jean-François Perdrix was elected a member of the Académie Saint-Luc and a year later was appointed to the service of Prince Louis-Joseph de Bourbon, the King's first cousin. His official title was "Painter of Hunts and Hounds". The young prince, like his cousin King Louis XV, was an avid hunter and his main residence was the Château de Chantilly. It was here that Perdrix produced most of his work. During the Revolution, Perdrix changed sides and became a fervent republican. The château was turned into a prison and the artist became its warden. He was known and feared for his intransigence, his rigour and a certain fanaticism that led him to collect all his canvases painted for the château, as well as a work by Rubens representing a "Maternity" that was hanging in the Chapel, and set fire to it on the terraces of Chantilly. This largely explains why very few paintings by Perdrix have survived. Expert : Cabinet TURQUIN - M. Stéphane Pinta : 01.47.03.48.78.
