Description
A Type 1784 cavalry sabre, known as the ‘Arco’, probably belonging to a non-commissioned officer. Brass hilt with fleurons; provision for a former leather thumb guard on the lower ferrule. A through-hole in the pommel for a sword strap; a very slight crack beginning to form on the fleuron of the crossguard. The arms of the guard are decorated with a line running along the edge. The tang is covered in sheepskin with a simple twisted filigree pattern (a few holes in the sheepskin). Straight blade with two fuller grooves, tapering to a point in line with the blade’s axis. Fine hallmarks: a crowned ‘K’ (Klingenthal) and a ‘B’ (Bisch) from the Klingenthal workshop. Blackened leather scabbard with three brass fittings (the original ferrule has been replaced). Total length 107 cm, blade length 91 cm.
